Chapter Thirteen

I heard the Historical Society meeting going on in the parlor of the Harmony House tonight. Second time here today. It was hard to believe that mild mannered Betsy Bennett had said what she did this afternoon. It left me puzzled and I’m sure that Detective Taylor felt the same.

I peeked around the dark wood frame of the cased opening. Apparently I was late. I’d taken a nap when I got back to the studio and Ruth left me a note that the gals were picking her up for this meeting. She included a suggestion that I might enjoy joining them tonight.

Hannah, standing at the front of the room with everyone’s focus on her, noticed me and said, “Come in please Jackie. Everyone, this is Jacqueline Parker, Ruth’s niece. I’m glad you came, because I wanted to explain to the committee the idea we discussed briefly on Saturday.”

I knew some of the faces that turned to look at me. Aunt Ruth’s friends, Dorothy, Eunice, and Betty from Shady Pines gave me big smiles and waves. Eleanor was here too. I was glad to see her and hoped we’d get a chance to catch up after the meeting was over.

Two elderly men sat on folding chairs next to each other. One with his legs stretched out in front of him and his unruly beard resting above his crossed arms. The other balding with reading glasses perched on his full bulbous nose, his eyes darting around the room. The balding one introduced himself as Elmer Fisher and pointing to his friend said, “This wily old man is Harry Cooper.”

A woman closer to my age smiled and moved over on the damask settee she occupied. “Hi, I’m Kay Whitlow. Welcome to our meeting.”

And of course, I knew Mark and Hannah from Sutton’s Antiques. Hannah continued on, holding up a clipboard. “We had a great deal of interest in more people joining our committee now that they’ve seen the projects ahead of us. Some signups from Saturday evening are for temporary volunteers to finish getting this place ready for opening. I’m excited to read a name or two willing to help with putting up a website for us too. That’ll be critical to be able to reach tourists and for special seasonal events. The website will have to be updated and I’m hopeful one of them will be willing to build it and maintain it.”

“What about a lawyer volunteer? Bet Kim will sue us for her fall,” Elmer said.

“People round here don’t sue over such things,” Eunice snapped.

“Wouldn’t be so sure about that missy,” Elmer retorted.

I could well imagine Eunice didn’t appreciate being called missy.

Hannah raised her hand to hush them. “He has a fair point. We are working with an insurance agency to acquire appropriate liability and property insurance. And…” She put her reading glasses on, flipped the signup sheet over, and peered down at the next paper on her clipboard. “Dane Berryman did donate twenty hours of legal service, valued at $4000.
